Glossary

​​Arcade
An arcade or video arcade was a place where an operator exploited various types of arcade machines, including pinball machines, video games, etc. but also other various types of coin-operated entertainment such as claw-cranes or redemption games. Flyers aimed at operators from various manufacturers always boasted about the "earning capacity" of their new creations i.e. the willingness of prospective players to part with their quarters in exchange for playing the game.

Arcade game
Commonly a game usually found in an arcade, but can be set up anywhere from bars, burger joints, movie theatres (some have separates arcades on the premises), camp grounds, stores, etc. This term can refer to both the physical cabinet itself as to the game, e.g. "Play the arcade game at home!" was sometimes used in advertising for home ports.

Arcade1Up
A Tastemakers LLC business. Arcade1Up launched in October 2018 with the following titles: Pac-Man, Galaga, Street Fighter II, Rampage, Centipede & Asteroids.

AtGames
AtGames well known for plug-and-play TV games sells miniaturized arcade machines and the Legends Ultimate machine.

 

Bonus

Extra points earned by performing certain actions or having certain items, e.g. "time left on the clock", "shoot all the targets" etc. sometimes on specific "bonus levels"

 

Bonus Level

Level in a game specifically designed to earn bonus points.

Cabinet
Classic form factor of the arcade video game.

Collectorcade
A Collectorcade is a miniaturized version of an arcade machine, considered by some as more of a toy than a proper gaming machine.

Countercade
A form factor in between the Partycade and the Collectorcade.

 

Lives

The amount of tries you had playing a particular game. Usually 3. In pinball parlance, this would be balls (in the old days you'd commonly have 5 balls, this later changed to 3. By beating a certain score or performing certain actions, an extra live could be obtained as a reward.

Partycade
The partycade is a form factor sold by Arcade1Up; it contains the monitor and control deck of their 3/4 size cabinet but in a much smaller package. It comes with brackets for mounting on a wall, hanging from a door or legs to use on a table.

ZzzZzz

Sleeping. Won't happen when you're playing, but when your opponent clears table after table after table in Pac-Man...
